Montegrappa fountain pens may feature different filling systems depending on the model:
Piston.
Cartridge/converter.
Power Push.
Free Drop Reservoir.
Each system has its own filling procedure, as explained in the FAQ How do I fill a fountain pen correctly?
All Montegrappa fountain pens featuring a cartridge/converter filling system come with a converter included. Cartridges can be purchased separately according to your preferences.
In the Inks & Refills section of our website, on the Refills page, you can select your pen type and the corresponding collection. It is important to specify both, as this selection allows you to identify the refill or cartridge compatible with your pen with certainty.
If your collection is not listed, you can complete the dedicated form, specifying the pen type and collection name and attaching clear, detailed photographs of your pen. It is important to include photographs of the refills or cartridges currently fitted in your pen, so that our After-Sales team can fully understand your request and verify compatibility.
Compatible refills are also listed on each product page under Features.
In the Inks & Refills section of the website, on the Refills page, you can select the pen type and the corresponding collection. It is important to provide both details, as this selection allows you to identify the refill or ink cartridge that is compatible with your product.
If the collection is not listed, you can fill in the dedicated form, specifying the pen type and collection name and attaching clear, detailed photographs of the product. It is important to include photographs of the refills or ink cartridges currently fitted in the pen, so that our After Sales team can better understand your request and verify compatibility.
The piston filling system incorporates an ink reservoir directly into the barrel of the pen, allowing it to be filled by turning the end knob to draw ink from the ink bottle. There is no need to disassemble the pen to fill a piston-filling fountain pen.
The cartridge/converter filling system, on the other hand, allows you to use either an ink cartridge or a converter, a removable, refillable ink reservoir that draws ink through a twist mechanism. In pens equipped with this filling system, the two options are interchangeable according to personal preference.
A ballpoint refill contains thick, oil-based ink that dries quickly and produces a precise, consistent line with light pressure on the paper.
A rollerball refill, on the other hand, uses a more fluid ink that glides more smoothly and requires minimal pressure, producing a fuller line closer to that of a fountain pen.
The two types of refill differ in shape and size and must be selected according to the pen type and model. In the Inks & Refills section, on the Refills page, you can identify the correct refill by entering both the pen type and the collection name in the designated fields.
Fountain pens with a piston filling system:
I. Turn the end knob counterclockwise until it stops.
II. Fully immerse the nib in the ink bottle.
III. Turn the end knob clockwise until it stops to draw ink into the reservoir.
IV. Remove the nib from the ink.
V. Turn the end knob half a turn counterclockwise, allowing a few drops of ink to flow out to expel any air. We recommend repeating steps II to V to ensure that all air has been expelled.
VI. Clean the nib with a damp, lint-free cloth.
Piston-filling fountain pens have an ink reservoir built into the barrel, so there is no need to disassemble the pen for filling.
Fountain pens with a cartridge/converter filling system:
Converter:
I. Unscrew the grip section from the barrel.
II. Turn the end of the converter counterclockwise until it stops.
III. Fully immerse the nib in the ink bottle.
IV. To draw ink into the pen, turn the end of the converter clockwise until the reservoir is completely filled.
V. Remove the nib from the ink.
VI. Turn the end of the converter half a turn counterclockwise, allowing a few drops of ink to flow out to expel any air. We recommend repeating steps IV to VII to ensure that all air has been expelled.
VII. Clean the nib with a damp, lint-free cloth.
VIII. Screw the grip section back onto the barrel.
Cartridge:
I. Unscrew the grip section from the barrel.
II. Remove the empty cartridge or converter.
III. Insert a new cartridge, applying gentle pressure to pierce the protective seal.
IV. Once the protective seal has been pierced, remove the cartridge and apply gentle pressure to eliminate any air bubbles.
V. Reinsert the cartridge and allow the ink to reach the nib (approximately one minute).
VI. Clean the nib with a damp, lint-free cloth.
VII. Screw the grip section back onto the barrel.
Fountain pens with a Power-Push filling system:
I. Unscrew the grip section from the barrel.

II. Open the small window that allows you to check the ink level in the reservoir.
III. Use the eyedropper to draw ink from the ink bottle.
IV. Using the eyedropper, transfer the ink directly into the reservoir, taking care not to fill it to the brim.
V. Screw the grip section back onto the barrel.
To replace the refill in a rollerball pen:
I. Remove the cap from the pen.
II. Unscrew the grip section from the barrel by turning it counterclockwise.
III. Remove the empty refill and insert a new one.
IV. Screw the grip section back onto the barrel.
To replace the refill in a ballpoint pen:
I. Remove the cap by turning it counterclockwise.
II. Remove the empty refill and insert a new one.
III. Screw the cap back onto the barrel by turning it clockwise.
Montegrappa refills are available in different tip sizes.
For rollerball pens:
F – Fine tip (0.5 mm).
M – Medium tip (0.7 mm).
B – Broad tip (1.0 mm).
For ballpoint pens:
M – Medium tip (1 mm).
B – Broad tip (1.2 mm).
The fine tip produces a thin, precise line, ideal for smaller handwriting; the medium tip is the most versatile for everyday use, while the broad tip offers a bolder, fuller line.
For fountain pens with a piston filling system, after filling the pen, turn the end knob half a turn counterclockwise, allowing a few drops of ink to flow out to expel any air.
For fountain pens with a cartridge/converter filling system, after filling the pen, follow the same procedure by turning the end of the converter half a turn counterclockwise. Alternatively, remove the cartridge from the pen, apply gentle pressure to eliminate any air bubbles, then reinsert it.
The lifespan of a refill depends on how frequently it is used, the pressure applied when writing, the tip size and the type of ink. Generally, ballpoint refills, which contain thicker ink, last longer than rollerball refills, whose more fluid ink is consumed more quickly. To extend the life of your refill, always close the pen after use and write without applying excessive pressure. When the line becomes faint or inconsistent, it is time to replace the refill.
We recommend using Montegrappa inks with our fountain pens, as they are specifically developed for our writing instruments.
While many third-party inks are available on the market, we cannot test every individual formulation and therefore cannot guarantee their compatibility with our pens.
In particular, permanent or water-resistant inks may contain more aggressive components that could damage certain parts of the pen, such as the ebonite feed.
Although regular cleaning and flushing with water are good maintenance practices, they do not guarantee ink compatibility or prevent potential damage caused by unsuitable ink formulations.
For these reasons, we recommend using Montegrappa inks.
To preserve the appearance and performance of your Montegrappa writing instrument over time, store it in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. When not in use, keep it with the cap securely closed or the tip retracted, depending on the model, preferably in its case, to protect it from dust, knocks and scratches.
It is important to avoid contact with solvents and chemicals to keep the finishes in excellent condition. If you use a fountain pen, carry it with the nib pointing upwards and perform care and maintenance regularly: you can find all the necessary information on the Use & maintenance page.
A few simple precautions will help preserve the beauty and performance of your Montegrappa pen over time.
The pen should be handled correctly: with fountain pens, it is best to avoid shaking the pen to prevent air bubbles from forming, and to write without applying excessive pressure so as not to damage the nib. Regular use of the fountain pen prevents ink from stagnating.
For cleaning the surfaces, we recommend using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, while avoiding harsh cleaners and solvents. Never use alcohol under any circumstances. To clean silver, gold and precious metal components, you can refer to the question How can I clean the silver or precious metal parts of my pen?
Carefully close the cap when the pen is not in use to prevent the ink from drying out. To store the pen, we recommend using its original packaging, a pen holder or a case, avoiding direct contact with other pens, which could scratch it. It is also important to protect it from knocks and accidental drops, including when pets are present.
When travelling, it is advisable to keep the fountain pen filled and with the nib pointing upwards, in order to reduce the risk of ink leakage.
If the fountain pen is not going to be used for an extended period, it is good practice to empty the reservoir and clean the pen thoroughly before storing it: once emptied, it can also be stored horizontally inside a case.
We recommend carrying out care and maintenance regularly: you can find all the necessary information on the Use & maintenance page.
Before requesting assistance, check that the refill or ink is not empty, that the refill is correctly inserted, and that the pen has been used and stored according to the instructions described on the Use & maintenance page in the FAQs.
Do not disassemble the pen or attempt to work on the nib or the pen’s internal mechanisms yourself, as any intervention not carried out by the authorised service network may compromise the instrument’s functioning and the validity of the warranty.
If the problem persists, you can initiate a service request using the Product Assistance form available on the Contact us page. When filling out the form, describe your needs precisely and attach the requested photographs: these steps are essential to help our After Sales team fully understand the issue and assess its nature. A larger number of images, particularly detailed photographs of the parts concerned, will allow us to make a more accurate assessment and provide you with the best possible assistance.
Use a soft, damp cloth to remove stains or fingerprints from resin or celluloid parts. It is important to avoid solvents or chemicals that could damage the surfaces. Never use alcohol on celluloid parts.
Sterling silver writing instruments should be cleaned with the cloth supplied or with another lint-free cloth. If necessary, a product specifically designed for cleaning silver can be used. Dirt and oxidation in pierced details and more elaborate engravings can be removed using a silver brush or a soft toothbrush.
To clean pens with a filling system using a piston, immerse the nib in water and rotate the end cap several times to fill and empty the reservoir, until the water runs clear. Perform the same operation to clean pens equipped with a converter, by rotating its end.
Rinse the nib by holding it under a stream of lukewarm running water. Important: do not use any other liquids or detergents.
Rinsing is necessary when the ink flow is irregular or stops, when the feed system is clogged, if the ink has dried, or when changing the ink colour.
Occasional signs of oxidation may appear on the metal parts of the pen. This is a perfectly natural phenomenon that attests to the authenticity of the materials used.
To restore their shine, simply polish them gently using the cloth supplied or a dedicated lint-free cloth. If necessary, you can use a product specifically designed for cleaning precious metals, taking care to avoid solvents and chemicals that could damage the surfaces. Never use alcohol on celluloid finishes.
Dirt and oxidation in pierced details and more elaborate engravings can be removed with a silver brush or a soft toothbrush.
To preserve the shine of the metal parts over time, use the cleaning cloth supplied or another lint-free cloth, using a suitable polishing product if necessary. It is important to avoid solvents and chemicals that could damage the surfaces. Never use alcohol. Dirt and oxidation on pierced details and more elaborate engravings can be removed with a silver brush or a soft toothbrush.
When a fountain pen stops writing, in most cases the reason may be simple. First, check that the reservoir, cartridge or converter still contains ink and that the cartridge is correctly inserted.
If the ink has dried in the nib or the flow is intermittent, rinse the nib under lukewarm running water, without using any other liquids or detergents, and gently dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Refill the pen after cleaning. For nibs equipped with an ebonite feed, fill and empty the reservoir twice using ink to help ensure the feed system works properly.
If the problem persists even after these checks, you can initiate a service request through the Product Assistance form on the Contact us page, describing your needs precisely and attaching the requested photographs.
To preserve the quality and appearance of leather goods over time, it is advisable to protect them from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, heat and humidity. For routine cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh detergents and products not specifically designed for leather, as these could alter the material’s characteristics. When not in use, store the item in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
To maintain the shine of the hardware, simply polish it gently using a special lint-free cloth or a soft brush.
For gold-plated hardware, if necessary, a product specifically designed for cleaning precious metals may be used, taking care to avoid solvents and chemicals that could damage the leather and surfaces.
If a Montegrappa item shows signs of wear or requires attention, you can request information about the available assistance options using the Product Assistance form on the Contact us page. Once your request has been reviewed, our After Sales team will provide you with all the necessary information, including the procedure for sending the product. Shipping arrangements must be agreed upon with our team in advance.
We recommend avoiding any repairs carried out independently and the use of non-specific products, as these could further damage the material.
Montegrappa blankets made of virgin wool, cashmere and alpaca, as well as Montegrappa cashmere scarves, must be dry-cleaned only.
To preserve the fabric’s characteristics and softness, it is important to follow the instructions on the label. Do not wash in water, do not use chlorine bleach and do not iron.
Beyond personal taste, choosing a writing instrument depends on your writing preferences and habits.
Fountain Pen: Liquid ink and a fluid writing experience. The nib responds to the pressure and movement of your hand. It requires some ongoing care, including cleaning and refilling.
Rollerball Pen: Liquid ink, like a fountain pen, combined with a ballpoint tip. It offers a smooth, effortless writing experience without the sensitivity of a nib, and requires less maintenance.
Ballpoint Pen: Thicker, oil-based ink that dries instantly. Ideal for quick writing and those seeking maximum practicality in everyday use. Unlike the rollerball pen, which features a removable cap, the ballpoint pen has a twist mechanism that extends and retracts the tip.
If the line width of your chosen nib does not fully meet your preferences, you can have it replaced free of charge, provided it is returned in perfect condition within six weeks of purchase. For more information on return procedures and general conditions, please refer to the Orders, Shipping and Returns section of our Frequently Asked Questions.

The various types of Montegrappa refills are available in the Inks & Refills section of our website, on the Refills page. For more information on refill compatibility with your pen, please refer to the question How can I find out which refill or replacement is compatible with my pen? in our Frequently Asked Questions.
EF – Extra Fine. Produces a very thin, precise line. Ideal for those with small handwriting or who prefer a fine, understated line.
F – Fine. Produces a fine line suitable for everyday writing, particularly for those seeking precision and legibility without an overly pronounced stroke.
M – Medium. Produces a medium-width line, fuller and more visible than EF and F. It is a versatile choice for everyday writing and is also recommended for those using a fountain pen for the first time.
B – Broad. A nib with a broad, rounded tip, ideal for those who enjoy a bold, fluid and clearly defined writing style.
ST. 1.1 – Stub. 1.1 mm. A flat-tipped nib designed to create natural variations in line width. Vertical strokes are broader, while horizontal strokes are thinner. It offers a subtle calligraphic effect that is also suitable for everyday writing.
ST. 1.5 – Stub. 1.5 mm. Follows the same principle as the 1.1 mm version, but features a wider tip that creates a more pronounced contrast between vertical and horizontal strokes. It is particularly suited to expressive and calligraphic writing. The 1.1 mm and 1.5 mm measurements indicate the nominal width of the nib; the thickness of each line also depends on the orientation of the nib, the paper and the ink used.
The availability of nib types may vary depending on the pen model.
Calligraphy nibs are available for selected pen models, offering a more expressive writing experience:
ST. 1.1 and ST. 1.5: Flat-tipped nibs that produce broader vertical strokes and finer horizontal strokes without the need to apply additional pressure.
Flex: Gold nibs designed to flex under gentle pressure, allowing the line width to vary naturally with the movement of the hand.
To choose the right nib, it is important to consider the tip size, the nib material and your personal writing style.
Nib sizes are identified by the following abbreviations:
EF (extra fine).
F (fine).
M (medium).
B (broad).
For flat-tipped calligraphy nibs, the abbreviations indicate the nominal width of the nib:
ST. 1.1 (1.1 mm).
ST. 1.5 (1.5 mm).
A fine nib is ideal for small handwriting and note-taking, a medium nib for everyday writing, and a broad nib for a fuller, more expressive line. The flat tip of a Stub nib is particularly suited to calligraphic and expressive writing.
As for materials, steel is stiffer and more robust, while gold (14 or 18 karat) is softer and offers greater sensitivity to writing pressure. The pressure and angle at which you write also play an important role, influencing the resulting line on the page. For example, those with a lighter touch may find a fine or medium nib more comfortable.
All nibs feature an iridium tip, a small, exceptionally hard-wearing insert applied to the point that glides across the paper. It reduces wear, contributes to the nib's longevity and enhances the smoothness of the writing experience.
Hold the pen between your thumb and index finger, resting it on your middle finger, with a light, relaxed grip. Hold the grip section approximately two to three centimetres from the nib, without positioning your fingers too close to the tip.
Angle the pen at approximately 45 degrees to the paper, ensuring that both tines of the nib rest evenly on the surface. There is no need to apply pressure: the nib glides across the paper under the weight of the pen itself. Excessive pressure could affect the nib tip and the quality of the line. For smoother writing, move your entire arm together with your fingers.
The cap can be removed or posted on the back of the pen, depending on your preferred balance.
