Use & maintenance

To preserve the quality, value and excellent performance of your Montegrappa products, we recommend following these simple care and maintenance guidelines regularly.

Fountain Pens

Fountain Pen Cleaning
Clean nibs regularly by holding them under lukewarm running water. Do not use any other liquids or cleaning agents. Rinsing is required whenever ink flow is intermittent or has stopped, when the feed system has become blocked, if ink has dried, or when changing ink colour.
To clean piston-fill pens, submerge the nib in water and twist the blind cap to fill and empty the reservoir several times until the water runs clear.
To clean pens fitted with a converter, submerge the nib in water and twist the converter knob to fill and empty the reservoir several times until the water runs clear.
Fountain Pen Tuning
Should your selected nib grade not perfectly match your preference, Montegrappa will replace the original nib free of charge if it is returned in new condition within six weeks of purchase from an authorised Monte-grappa dealer.
For nib units fitted with ebonite feeds, it is advised to fill and empty the reservoir with ink twice before first use, and following cleaning.
To prevent your fountain pen from leaking, keep it filled and carry it with the nib facing upwards. For opti-mal performance, we recommend the use of Montegrappa inks.
Surface cleaning
Remove stains or fingerprints from resin or celluloid body sections by wiping clean with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use solvents or chemical products that may damage surfaces. Under no circumstances should alcohol be used on celluloid finishes.
Pens made of sterling silver should be cleaned with the supplied cleaning cloth, or other lint-free cloth. Use silver polish where necessary. Dirt and tarnishing found in fretwork and intricate engravings can be removed using a silver brush or a soft toothbrush.

Filling system

IV. Screw the grip section back into the barrel
V. Wipe the nib clean with a damp, lint-free cloth
Filling converter fountain pens
I. Unscrew the grip section from the barrel
II. If no converter is installed, insert one into the section entrance. If threaded, screw it down firmly
III. Turn the end of the converter anticlockwise until it stops
IV. Dip the entire nib into the ink bottle
V. To draw ink into the pen, turn the end of the converter clockwise until the chamber is full
VI. Remove the nib from the ink
VII. Twist the end of the converter half a turn anticlockwise, letting a little ink drip out to release air
VIII. Screw the grip section back into the barrel
IX. Wipe the nib clean with a damp, lint-free cloth
Filling piston fountain pens
Piston-fill fountain pens have an ink reservoir within the barrel. No disassembly is required for refilling:

Mechanical Pencils

Mechanical Pencil Filling
To advance the lead, twist the cap clockwise in short turns. To retract it, twist the cap slightly clockwise and hold it in this position while gently pressing the lead back into the pencil.

To insert new leads:
I. Remove the cap by turning it anticlockwise.
II. Remove the black cap from the lead chamber.
III. Insert leads of the correct size into the chamber.
IV. Replace the black cap.
V. Screw the cap back onto the barrel by turning it clockwise.
Clearing broken leads
Occasionally, a lead may break into small fragments inside the pencil. These fragments may remain trapped in the mechanism or emerge from the tip while causing the lead to retract when pressure is applied during writing.
In this case, remove the mechanism and empty all intact leads from the chamber. Then operate the mechanism repeatedly until all broken lead fragments have been expelled. Before reassembling and refilling the pencil, make sure that no fragments remain inside the mechanism.
