The annual edition of 1996, Special Reserve, is dedicated to the marriage that has bound for many centuries wine to writing and to mankind - Wine, one of our oldest delights. The delicious drink, full of symbolic meanings, whose name has appeared on innumerable pages of science, history and literature. In the Greek culture it is the offering with which Ulysses frees his companions from the Cyclops. In the Christian tradition it represents the blood of Christ, the sacrificial lamb that cleanses humanity from sin. With Dionysus, the Greek divinity of wine, it becomes a cult celebrated in Athens with dialogues, choruses and masked dances. At the times of ancient Rome, Bacchus was the god worshiped as the inventor of this drink that inspired enthusiasm and inebriation. During the Bacchanalia of Imperial Rome, it is again new wine that brought about joyful merry-making. Countless poets and writers, in any age and country, have found their inspiration from a glass of wine! The collection, manufactured in sterling silver chiselled in low-relief, had been produced also in 18K gold, in a splendid limited edition of 100 fountain pens and 30 rollerballs. Every little part of each piece is hand turned from red celluloid. On the body and cap ?grows? a vine shoot, paired with a clip on which an abundant bunch of grapes stands out: Montegrappa?s elegant invitation to a joyful toast that will accompany writing for a lifetime.
