European Community?s 50th anniversary On the 9th of May 1950, as the echoes of guns were still a close memory, the French statesman Robert Schuman suggested, in a far-sighted speech, the idea of a united and free Europe, through respect between populations, cooperation and democracy. The Statesman?s suggestion became reality in April 1951, with the constitution of the European Community. Fifty years on, Montegrappa chose to celebrate this exceptional anniversary by designing and manufacturing a precious collection of writing instruments, approved by the European Community and intended as exclusive gifts for high ranking State and Government Personalities. A prestigious edition followed by another commemorative collection, entirely dedicated to faithful collectors, both designed by the renowned designer Maurizio Cavazzutti. Delightful reflections of the blue mother-of-pearl resin glow from beneath the superbly handcrafted sterling silver ?mesh?, and composed using multiples of the commemorative logo. 500 fountain pens in sterling silver were produced and only 100 in 18K gold are still available. They all feature the typical piston filling system and a nib in 18K gold, partially platinum coated. The clip of each pen bears chisel-work representing symbolic leaves of the olive tree of peace, and the number 50 for the commemoration. A crown of twelve precious sapphires, as many as the countries that joined the European Community, completes the final touch to the pen. The commemorative graphics and Montegrappa?s logo can be found on the ring of the cap. The edition was completed by 100 rollerballs in sterling silver and 10 in 18K gold.
